A person charged with a crime, or defendant, will sit in jail until a bail hearing. The judge at a bail hearing will set a bond amount that the defendant needs to pay. If they cannot afford the bail, they may call on the services of a bail bondsman.
Bail agents are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The defendant will call them and tell them their full name, the jail’s location, and the bail amount. The defendant will pay 10% of the bond to the bondsman to acquire their services, and the bail bondsman will pay the rest.
The fee may be higher or lower based on the circumstances. The bail bondsman will then make sure the defendant goes to all of the court dates and avoids anything that may break their probation. If the defendant fulfills their obligations, the bail bondsman will be returned the bond he paid.
