Many wonder what goes on behind the gates of Montessori kindergartens. Some don’t understand how the program works. The Montessori system trains students to be confident and self-reliant. It is a learning-centered system where the student learns about the world through a well-rounded academic foundation.
A typical school day begins at 8:30 am and ends at 3 pm. Parents drop off the students between 8-8:30 am. Teachers welcome them with a warm greeting. They get in class for the first circle time to discuss the calendar and weather with singing sessions as teachers introduce learning concepts for the day. Students freely choose work and do it individually, with the help of classmates, or under a teacher’s guidance.
They create words and sounds of the alphabet, paint shapes and textures, practice conversational skills, and do simple cleaning tasks. They serve snacks during the break. The children sit around the table or mat. They clean after eating and head to the playground. The final circle time recaps the day’s lessons before each child is prepared and released to the parent at 3 pm.
